Let’s just say the obvious out loud so we can move on: Your body ain’t 40 anymore.
Yeah, mine neither. But I’ll also say that when I was around 40, I made a conscious decision for my future. That I would get in good physical shape and stay that way. And I can honestly say that today, at 67 years old, I’m in probably the best shape of my life.
There’s no amount of pretending, wishing, or selective memory that’s going to change the fact that your retired old man body isn’t 40 anymore. So this one should be personal. Did you used to think staying in decent shape would just somehow continue? You know, if you stayed active, didn’t go completely off the rails, that things would hold together?
Well, that may have worked right up until it didn’t. Then probably came the little reminders:
- Something hurts that didn’t used to
- Energy drops off faster than expected
- Recovery takes longer (a lot longer)
- Doctor visits get a little more… frequent
You might have chalked it up to regular “aging”, but somewhere in there, you realized: This isn’t maintenance anymore. This is management.
Two Roads You Can Choose(You Already Know Them)
Let’s not overcomplicate this. There are really two directions this can go.
Road #1: Let it slide
- Move less
- Eat whatever
- Ignore the warning signs
- Tell yourself, “Well, I’m getting older…”
That road is easy. Real easy. And it sneaks up on you fast. But why would you want to aspire to feeling like shit all of the time?
Road #2: Take ownership
- Stay active (even when you don’t feel like it)
- Pay attention to what your body’s telling you
- Adjust, instead of quitting
- Do the work to maintain what you’ve still got
Not as easy. But a hell of a lot better than letting it all slide.
You’ll Need to Make a Call
There will come a moment (not dramatic, just honest) where you’ll think: “Am I maintaining, or slowly giving up?”
You might not like the answer. But you need to hear it. Because once you see it, you’ve got a choice.
Here’s the Truth (No Sugar-Coating)
Your body will decline if you don’t use it. Not might. Will.
- Strength goes.
- Balance goes.
- Energy goes.
And once it starts sliding, it picks up speed. That’s just reality.
But Here’s the Good News
You don’t need to be an athlete. You don’t need to look like you did at 30 (thank God). You just need to stay in the fight. Consistently.
So What Does That Actually Look Like?
Nothing fancy. Just disciplined basics. Here are 5 basic suggestions to get you started:
1. Move Every Damn Day
I don’t care what it is. Walk. Stretch. Light weights. Yard work with intention. But move. Your body was built for it, and it reminds you when you don’t.
Start simple:
- 20–30 minute walk
- A few basic strength movements
- Stretch the stuff that feels tight (which is… everything)
Consistency beats intensity every time.
2. Strength Matters More Than You Think
If you follow me, you’ll find that I am a big proponent of strength training. Strength isn’t about looking good anymore. It’s about:
- Getting up without struggle
- Carrying things without pain
- Staying independent
If you lose strength, you lose options. So don’t lose it. Increase it as much as you can. Then you maintain or even gain options.
3. Watch the “Slow Quit”
This one’s sneaky. You don’t just stop. You ease off.
- “I’ll skip today.”
- “My knee’s a little sore.”
- “I’ll get back to it next week.”
And before long, you’re out. Pay attention to that pattern. Shut it down early.
4. Sleep and Fuel Actually Matter Now
You can’t run on fumes anymore. Bad sleep? You feel it. Garbage food? You feel it. Doesn’t mean perfection. Just means awareness. Get decent sleep. Eat like a grown man, not a college kid. Simple. Not easy.
5. Work With Your Body, Not Against It
You’re going to have limitations. Things will ache. Some shit won’t work like it used to. Fine.
Adjust. Don’t quit. There’s always a version of movement you can do. Find it.
Man-to-Man Checkpoint
Alright, no dodging this one. Answer honestly:
- Am I taking care of my body, or ignoring it?
- When was the last time I moved on purpose?
- Am I maintaining, or slowly giving up?
And here’s your move: Do something physical today. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today.
Even if it’s just a walk around the block. Especially if it’s just a walk around the block.
The Part That Should Hit Home
This isn’t about vanity. This isn’t about impressing anyone. This is about one thing: How well do you want to live the years you’ve got left? Because your body is the vehicle. And if you don’t maintain it, you’re not going very far.
Final Thought
Look, you don’t get your 40-year-old body back. That ship sailed. But you do get a say in what kind of shape you’re in right now, and moving forward. So make the call. Not perfectly. Just intentionally. Because the goal isn’t to turn back time. It’s to be physically feeling the best you can, during the time you’ve got left.
This post launches a series of 7 posts that introduces the Old Man Thriving Blog. I hope you enjoy. Next, we’ll ask ourselves the question: “Who the Hell Am I Now?”
Until then, move your body. You’ll thank yourself later.
Peace,
Gus
